Meeting the Women of Lesotho in Southern Africa

Lesotho is a country that is landlocked and completely enclosed by South Africa and officially it is well-known as, the Kingdom of Lesotho. On the 4 October 1966, Lesotho announced its independence from the United Kingdom. Long before this took place, Lesotho was known to everybody as Basutoland. The name Lesotho itself means something along the lines of, land of the people who speak Sesotho. One of the largest cities in Lesotho is Maseru, which also happens to be the countries capital. Being so mountainous it can be a difficult country to explore in your own vehicle and it is advised to look into booking with an experienced overland tour provider.

Lesotho is a beautiful place to visit and offers a variety of landscapes from grasslands, waterfalls and lakes to majestic mountain ranges. Lesotho offers visitors a chance to see some rare fauna and flora and an abundance of opportunities for fascinating discoveries and adventures.

Take for example the Sani Mountain Pass, which can be located in the West of Kwazulu-Natal. The pass can be found between Kwazulu-Natal and Mokhotlong, in the North-eastern parts of Lesotho. This is the only pass over the Drakensberg that can take vehicles into the very mountainous area of the Kingdom Lesotho. To travel on this road you would need a 4×4, in fact it is actually law that you can only use a 4×4 vehicle to ride on the path. Various different tour companies offer guided tours along this route every year. The pass is about 9km long and lies between the borders of South Africa and Lesotho. The terrain is excellent for 4×4 enthusiasts and offers travellers beautiful views of the Mkomazana River.  The difficult road through the pass, might be a thing of the past very soon, as it will eventually become a complete tarred road, so if you still wish to visit while the terrain is more rugged, it is best to do it soon.
